Keeping Your Pets Safe and Hydrated in the Summer
Whether you're going for walks, hiking, or just enjoying the backyard, it’s important to know how the heat affects our pets and what we can do to protect them. Let’s go over some easy tips to help keep your furry friends healthy and comfortable all summer long.
Why is it important to keep pets hydrated during the summer?
We don't want them to get heat stroke. That's probably the number one concern. Additionally, we want to keep them hydrated to support all bodily functions. Just like with us, hydration is key when it's hot out.
How can I tell if my pet is dehydrated?
That's a great question. From a medical standpoint, I feel their gums. If it feels dry or tacky, that's an indicator of dehydration. Another way is to tent their skin. Hopefully, Judy won't get mad at me. I pinch the skin, and if it snaps back elastically, that's good. If it stays tented, they're dehydrated. Watch for signs of lethargy, reluctance to move, or general unwellness, which may indicate dehydration.
What can I do to make sure my pet stays hydrated?
No matter where you go, bring water with you. If your dog will drink from your hand, that's great, but there are portable water bottles with a little dog bowl attached. Consider ice cubes or hydrating fruits like watermelon. Encouraging water intake is key.
When is it too hot to take my dog on a walk?
That's a great question. It really depends. I start thinking about it when it's around 80°F. In humid states, consider it at 70°F. Be cautious over 85°F. If it's 83°F and breezy, and you're out for a few minutes, it's probably fine. Use your best judgment. If you're hot and sweating, or if your dog is panting, think twice about it.
What should I do if my pet gets overheated?
Damp towels are a great way to cool them down. Encourage water intake, and if you get a damp towel and put it over them, it can help. Wetting their feet can also be effective. Feet and ears are great areas to cool them off.
Can my pet get sunburned?
Yes, they can. Some types of skin cancer in pets are solar-induced, just like in people. I think of light-colored pit bulls that like to sunbathe. If they've sunbathed their entire life, start looking for moles, just like your doctor would. Sunburn appears pink and crusty, maybe a little itchy. You can use pet-safe sunblock or human baby sunblock.
Is it okay to leave my pet in the car if I'm just running a quick errand?
Absolutely not. If you want to test this out, sit in your car for 2 minutes when it's 90°F outside with the windows rolled up. It's a hard no. I've had that experience. Tutti is new to me, and I've never had a dog before. I've taken her into stores that weren't pet-friendly, but once I explain it's too hot outside, I haven't had issues. She's small, I can carry her, and she's really cute, so that helps.
What are some fun ways to keep pets cool during the summer?
Find a nice grassy spot under a tree. That's what I've been doing with her. Encourage sitting in the shade. Sprinklers and hoses can be fun, although this one hates water. Ice cubes can be entertaining, as some dogs love chomping on them. Cool watermelon can also be a fun option.
Are some pets more sensitive to heat than others?
Yes. A large black dog is a common candidate for heat stroke, as darker colors absorb more heat. Be conscious of this. While small dogs can also get heat stroke, it's easier to cool them down than a big dog. Be careful, especially with black-colored dogs, as they inherently get hotter.
What's your number one tip for keeping pets safe in the heat?
When in doubt, put them inside in the AC. Use your best instincts. If you're hot, sweating, or flushed, bring them inside. Even if you're not in a pet-friendly place, most people have a heart. Explain that your dog is too hot, and people will generally be nice to you.
Summer is a great time to enjoy outdoor activities, but always remember to keep your pet in mind. They can't tell us when they're too hot, and some dogs will keep going until they're unwell. When in doubt, keep them inside and keep your pets in mind during the summer. Stay safe and have a great day. Let us know if you need anything.
