What are some of the most common illnesses or diseases you see in cats?
It depends on how old they are. In younger cats, the most common issues are parasites, exposure to feline AIDS or feline leukemia if they're indoor or outdoor cats, or come from a colony situation, or even from a shelter. We also see problems with GI upset. As these cats get older, we start to think more along the lines of kidney disease, thyroid disease, or other GI changes.
How can a cat owner tell if their cat might be sick?
Cats are terrible at telling us something is wrong. The biggest indicators are changes in their normal routine. This could include hiding, not finishing their food, acting more abnormal towards you, sometimes even more affectionate than usual, or significantly less. Anything that seems a little off should be noted.
What are some early warning signs of kidney disease or diabetes?
These are seen in middle-aged to older cats. Often, there's an increase in drinking and urination, but we can also see inappetence, vomiting, diarrhea, hiding, lethargy, and drastic or mild weight loss. Look out for these little signs here and there.
When is vomiting or diarrhea something to worry about?
Some cats just vomit and have diarrhea. Like any pet, there can be episodes where things come and go. It might be due to eating something out of the ordinary, but in cats, it's pretty uncommon. If it extends for more than 24 to 48 hours, you should get them checked. Even if it's the first episode and new for them, it may be worth a look.
How serious are respiratory infections in cats and can they be prevented?
Respiratory infections in cats range from mild colds to serious conditions requiring extensive treatment with antibiotics and medications. The best approach is to assess them, get temperatures, possibly discuss X-rays, and ensure all bases are covered. Upper respiratory infections can be picked up, and past infections can flare up during stress. Knowing what we're dealing with makes it easier to manage.
What's one thing you wish more cat owners knew about their cat's health?
Understand your gut instincts and recognize when your cat isn't acting quite right. Cats are finicky creatures and love to defy rules. It's important to catch issues before they become severe. Cats are excellent at hiding and pretending everything is fine. This is why annual exams and general checkups once or twice a year are fantastic to check in on things.
